The library wishes to provide public access to OPAC. The Institution does not have a devoted computer department. The internet connection is provided by a network provider. How to go about it. What would be the financial committment from the side of the Library. Any Idea will be greately appreciated.

1. Please ask the Internet Service
Provider(ISP) to give you a static/public domain IP. Though
sometimes this is given free of cost by the ISP other wise ISP may
charge you around Rs 5,000 per year. However this changes from ISP
to ISP
2. To your library server add an addtional network card. Network card are now available for less than Rs 200. I will call this network card as New Network Card 3. Now assign the public IP to the New Network Card Regards NewGenLib Open Source Team On 06/27/2012 01:44 PM, Nagaraja Rao [via NewGenLib] wrote: The library wishes to provide public access to OPAC. The institution has received a public IP from SkyNet. However it seems it would stay on the dlink which connects two PCs to Internet. As on today they have not yet configured the service. Any ideas on how to get round the problem.

The dlink router has a provision to set up virtual servers. Give your library server ip and port number in virtual server section.

The public IP number we received is in 180 series, which will be assigned to DLink, I suppose. There is some network option where in Dlink, we can provide different ip addresses like 192.168.0.1, to other PCs. If these IPs (192.168.1.0) are assigned to the server then how general public can access Newgenlib?

The Internet link to DLink router:
Does this have the public IP?

Yes I think so. The IP number for the Dlink is: 180.151.75.58 and internet providers Gateway is 180.151.75.57. In the Dlink under Network tab they have used DHCP to provide address range 192.168.0.100 to 60numbers. Now the server has 192.168.0.100 with 192.168.0.1 as Gateway.
Even the subnet mask for the public IP is 255.255.255.252 internally it is 255.255.255.0 Thank you for the help. |
Ok. Can you confirm whether your DLink
router has the option of configuring "Virtual Servers"?
Please send the screen shot of the admin page of D-Link router On 07/31/2012 02:29 PM, nagaraja rao [via NewGenLib] wrote: Yes I think so. Dear Sir,
As mentioned earlier what should be the IP of the server is it 180.151.75.58 or 192.168.0.100 what about the second PC in the library. As a temporary measure we have disconnected DLAN and given the IP number to server which now working. However we are not able to utilize the second PC, as it is not connected. Thus we require a permanent solution. The configuration of the server is good with 4gb ram. Do you have any means of improving the speeds of access and capacity to sustain more users. Rao |
