Restore the database

Hi

I need installed NGL in our campus suddenly Hard Disk got problem and it is not working. So i have installed NGL in New Hard Disk, i have a backup file  in format *.backup but i am not able to restore it kindly help in this.

is it in compress format or plain format?
how much the backup file size?
what's the version of postgresql in old system( crashed/formatted) and what is the postgresql version in new system?

IT is in plain format and size is 1.21 GB and Version Postgresql 8.3 and system is crashed and we have data folder also

It is a plain backup file, so you can't restore directly.
you have to restore the plain backup file using commands.

I have restore the backup but now I am not able to login in the application kindly help what will be the user name and password
