Our hesitation was not regarding the difficulty in changing the source code :)

Separate errors for separate error events, not a one-size-fits-all message. For example, other good websites, when you input a username that isn't in their database, would not say the usual "invalid user/password" message but rather, will inform the user that the username does not exist and would give the option to the user to register instead with that name.  
Although I would understand your hesitation to change the error if it would be very hard and tricky to insert it into the source code. That's just my thoughts on the matter.
